New research poster at ERS 2022 meeting

5 September 2022

Prof. Jean Louis Pépin is presenting results of a new study at the ERS 2022 congress. The authors investigated the relationship between a new measure of Respiratory Effort (RE) burden (expressed as a percentage of sleep time spent with increased RE) based on a measurement of mandibular jaw movements and prevalent hypertension in adults referred for evaluation of suspected OSA.

A total of 1,127 subjects were included in the study; the prevalence of hypertension was about 31%.

The study highlights the role of RE burden as a relevant risk factor for prevalent hypertension in OSA, the classification model showed good performance for the prediction of hypertension with a ROC AUC of 0.88 (95% CI 0.85 - 0.90), sensitivity of 0.75 (95% CI -0.83) and specificity of 0.83 (95% CI 0.78-0.88).
